Participation Guidelines for the 12th Bangladesh Junior Science Olympiad (BdJSO 2026)

Introduction

The Bangladesh Junior Science Olympiad (BdJSO) is Bangladesh's premier science competition for school students. It aims to inspire scientific curiosity, promote critical thinking, and encourage the next generation of scientists.

Organized by the Society for the Popularization of Science, Bangladesh (SPSB), BdJSO also serves as the official national selection programme for the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO). Each year, thousands of students from across the country participate in this nationwide competition, with the top performers advancing through intensive training camps before the final Bangladesh team is selected for IJSO.

Registration

Students must complete their registration through the official registration portal: online.bdjso.org

The registration period, competition schedule, and venue information will be announced through the official website and social media channels. Registered participants will also receive important updates via email and SMS.

Registration can be completed using any internet-enabled device, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, or desktop computers.

Eligibility

Participation is open to students studying in any recognized school, college, or madrasah in Bangladesh.

Students from the following education systems are eligible:

  • Bangla Medium
  • English Version
  • English Medium
  • Madrasah

Participants must satisfy the age eligibility announced for the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) for the corresponding competition year.

Competition Categories

Students from any educational institution in Bangladesh who were born on or after January 1, 2011, are eligible to register and participate.

The Olympiad is divided into three academic categories:

  • Primary Category: Class 3 to Class 5 (or equivalent).
  • Junior Category: Class 6 to Class 8 (or equivalent).
  • Secondary Category: Class 9, Class 10, SSC 2026 candidates, and Class 11 (or equivalent).

Note: Category placement is determined by the student's current academic class in 2026. This rule applies uniformly across Bangla Medium, English Medium, English Version, and Madrasah systems.

Competition Format

BdJSO is conducted through multiple stages:

  1. Online Registration
  2. Regional Olympiad
  3. National Olympiad
  4. National Camp
  5. Team Selection Camp
  6. Bangladesh National Team Selection
  7. International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO)

Each stage is designed to progressively identify, train, and prepare the country's most talented young science students.

Examination Format

Questions assess conceptual understanding and scientific reasoning in:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology

Regional Olympiad

Questions may include:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
  • Short-answer questions
  • Conceptual and analytical problems

National Olympiad

The National Olympiad follows a more advanced format inspired by the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), including:

  • Short-answer questions
  • Analytical problem-solving
  • Integrated questions combining Physics, Chemistry, and Biology

Participants are expected to demonstrate strong conceptual understanding rather than memorization.

Language

Question papers will be available in both:

  • Bengali
  • English

Participants may choose either language during the examination.

Syllabus

The syllabus is primarily based on the National Curriculum of Bangladesh according to each category.

However, participants are strongly encouraged to develop advanced problem-solving skills beyond the textbook curriculum.

Official syllabus guidelines, preparation materials, and previous years' question papers will be available on the BdJSO website.

Examination Duration & Marking

  • Each paper contains multiple questions with varying marks.
  • The examination duration is approximately 60–90 minutes, depending on the competition stage.
  • Mark allocation varies according to the complexity of each question.

Results

Results will be published on the official website.

Separate result lists will be announced for:

  • Primary Category
  • Junior Category
  • Secondary Category

Qualified participants will receive instructions for the next stage through the official website, email, and SMS.

National Camp & Team Selection

Outstanding performers from the National Olympiad will be invited to participate in the National Camp and Team Selection Camp.

Selection for the Bangladesh National Team is based on continuous evaluation, including:

  • Communication skills
  • Teamwork
  • Discipline and attitude
  • Leadership potential
  • Physical and mental readiness

The final six-member Bangladesh National Team will represent the country at the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO).
